Learn about Wegovy costs in 2025, including pricing with and without insurance coverage, tips to save, and financial assistance options.

What you’ll learn:

  • Wegovy® is a once-weekly injectable medication that is FDA-approved to help people lose weight and prevent heart disease.
  • Wegovy® has a list price of $1,350 per month without insurance, but there are many ways to get it at a reduced price, including getting it through NovoCare® Pharmacy.
  • Several factors may influence what you’ll actually pay for Wegovy®, including insurance coverage, whether you get it directly from the manufacturer, and pharmacy choice.

While you’re likely familiar with the name Ozempic® due to its popularity as an off-label weight loss medication, you might know less about Wegovy®. The most important thing to know is they’re essentially the same medication, semaglutide, in slightly different doses and approved for different purposes. Ozempic® is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy® is FDA-approved for weight loss and to prevent heart disease.

Like most GLP-1 medications, Wegovy® comes with a hefty price tag. Without a generic alternative and with demand at an all-time high, it remains one of the pricier options for weight loss. The good news? There are ways for you to save on it even if you don’t have insurance.

Let’s break down the costs, insurance coverage potential, and ways to reduce what you pay out of pocket for Wegovy® in 2025.

What is Wegovy®?

Like Ozempic®, Wegovy® is a once-weekly injection that can help reduce appetite, slow digestion, and regulate blood sugar. The semaglutide in Wegovy® works by activating receptors in the brain, stomach, pancreas, and other organs that respond to the hormone GLP-1, which plays a key role in managing hunger and fullness. It also slows down how quickly food moves through your stomach, helping you feel full longer, which can naturally lead to eating less and supporting sustained weight loss.

Does insurance cover Wegovy®?

Insurance coverage is rare for Wegovy® because weight loss medications are not typically covered by insurance. It’s worth checking with your plan to get the details. Keep in mind that policies can change, and some plans have started limiting coverage for GLP-1 medications.

Wegovy®‘s list price is around $1,350 for a 28-day supply. Without coverage, this can be a significant expense, but there are options available to help manage costs, which we’ll explore.

If you’re considering Wegovy®, your first step should be to contact your insurance provider. Ask about coverage, conditions, and any required documentation. Remember, advocating for yourself is key—a letter from your doctor can sometimes make a meaningful difference in coverage decisions.

How much does Wegovy® cost with insurance?

If you have insurance, what you pay out of pocket will depend on your plan, coverage details, and whether you meet certain requirements.  Again, most insurers don’t automatically cover weight-loss medications, so getting Wegovy® approved often involves getting prior authorization and proof that other weight-loss methods haven’t worked. Here’s a look at what different types of insurance might cover:

  • Private insurance: Most private insurance plans don’t cover Wegovy® or any medications for weight loss. Even if Wegovy® is covered, your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan’s drug tier, copays, and deductible status. In many cases, Wegovy® is classified as a Tier 3 or specialty drug, meaning it comes with higher copays.
  • Medicare: Typically, Medicare Part D doesn’t cover weight-loss drugs, but there’s a push to change that. Insurers and policymakers are weighing the costs and impact of broader coverage, with further decisions expected by April 2025
  • Medicaid: Coverage varies by state, and some states are expanding access to weight-loss medications, but it’s not guaranteed. If you have Medicaid, check your state’s policy.
  • VA & TRICARE: Coverage for weight-loss medications under VA and TRICARE is limited and often tied to specific medical conditions.
    • TRICARE covers medications like Wegovy® for people with a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27+ with related health conditions) who have completed a six-month supervised weight-loss program and tried other approved medications first.
    • VA coverage is even more restrictive. CHAMPVA will only cover GLP-1 medications for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. Anyone looking for coverage should check their specific plan details, as policies can change.

Can you get Wegovy® for free with insurance?

While getting Wegovy® completely free, even with insurance, is rare, savings programs can help lower costs. If you have commercial insurance, the Wegovy® Savings Card could reduce your cost to $0, but only if your plan leaves you with a low enough out-of-pocket cost. The card only provides up to $225 of savings per 28-day supply, so if your cost after insurance is higher, you’ll still have to pay the difference.

How to get Wegovy® for $499 a month

If your insurance doesn’t cover Wegovy® or you are uninsured, you may be able to get it for $499 per month through NovoCare® Pharmacy. This price applies to all five dosage strengths of Wegovy®: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, 2.4 mg.

Important note: This savings program isn’t available if you’re on Medicare, Medicaid, or other government-funded insurance plans. But if you have private insurance, it’s worth checking if you qualify—visit Wegovy’s website to learn more.

What other factors affect the cost of Wegovy®?

What you’ll pay out-of-pocket for Wegovy® depends on a few key factors, with insurance coverage being the biggest one. Wegovy® has no generic version because it’s still under patent protection, preventing other manufacturers from legally producing a cheaper alternative until the patent expires. That exclusivity also keeps prices high for now. Here’s a look at what else will come into play:

  • Manufacturer pricing – Novo Nordisk sets the list price for Wegovy®, but things like Medicare price negotiations, insurance changes, and market demand could affect costs in the future.
  • Location – Medication prices aren’t the same everywhere. Local regulations, competition, and even the pharmacy you choose can make a difference.
  • Pharmacy pricing – Some pharmacies offer better deals than others, so it’s worth comparing prices between retail, mail-order, and specialty pharmacies.
  • Savings programs & discounts – Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy® Savings Card can lower costs to as little as $0 per month for eligible people. For those who are cash-paying or without insurance coverage, NovoCare® Pharmacy offers Wegovy® for $499 per month. Other pharmacies and online prescription services might also provide additional discounts.

Knowing what influences Wegovy®’s cost can help you find ways to save—whether it’s shopping around for better prices, checking your insurance benefits, or looking into savings programs.

You shouldn’t take Wegovy® if you have:

  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) – This rare type of thyroid cancer may be worsened by Wegovy®.
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) – A genetic disorder that raises the risk of thyroid tumors.

Talk to your doctor about whether Wegovy® is right for you if you have

  • A history of pancreatitis – Wegovy® can increase the risk of pancreatic inflammation.
  • Severe digestive disorders – If you have gastroparesis or other significant gastrointestinal conditions, Wegovy® may not be a safe option.
  • Diabetic retinopathy – Wegovy® has been linked to worsening eye complications in people with diabetes.

You should also avoid Wegovy® if you are:

  • Pregnant or planning to become pregnant – Wegovy® is not safe during pregnancy and should be stopped at least two months before trying to conceive.
  • Breastfeeding – There is limited data on whether Wegovy® passes into breast milk, so it is not recommended while nursing.

The good news is your cost won’t change as your dose increases. Whether you’re prescribed 0.25 mg or the full 2.4 mg dose, all prefilled pens are priced the same. Where you get them filled will determine the price.

Will I have trouble finding Wegovy® due to shortages?

In February 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that the shortage of Wegovy® was officially over. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer, has increased production to meet current and projected demand, ensuring that all doses are regularly shipped to wholesalers.

Wegovy® and other semaglutide medications had been in short supply for more than two years due to overwhelming demand and limited manufacturing capacity. To address this, the FDA placed Wegovy® on its drug shortage list, a designation that allowed compounding pharmacies to step in and create equivalent versions of the medication, often at a lower cost.

With Wegovy® officially off the shortage list, compounding pharmacies must stop making these versions unless it’s for personalized dosing needs as determined by a doctor.

While the nationwide shortage has been resolved, you might still experience occasional, localized supply disruptions as products move through the distribution chain to pharmacies. To assist people in locating available doses, Novo Nordisk has introduced the “Find My Meds” app, designed to help you find Wegovy® at nearby pharmacies.

Can Wegovy® be used with other weight-loss medications?

Wegovy® should only be combined with other weight-loss medications under a doctor’s supervision. Taking multiple weight-loss drugs can increase side effects and may not be safe for everyone. Always check with your healthcare provider before adding or changing medications.

For more information, check our article about managing the side effects of Wegovy® and read the  Wegovy® safety information.

Wegovy®: Side effects and warnings

Wegovy® can be an effective weight-loss tool, but like any medication, it comes with potential side effects. Some are mild and temporary, while others can be more serious and require immediate medical attention. Understanding how Wegovy® affects your body can help you manage side effects and use the medication safely.

Wegovy®: Most common side effects

Mild side effects are most common when first starting Wegovy® or increasing its dose. Since the medication affects digestion, it can cause temporary discomfort as your body adjusts. These side effects typically improve over time and may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue

Wegovy®: Serious side effects and warnings

While Wegovy® is considered safe for most people, certain side effects require immediate medical attention. Always follow prescription guidelines, monitor how your body responds, and discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Seek emergency medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Pancreatitis – Symptoms include severe abdominal pain that radiates to the back, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Vision changes – Sudden changes in eyesight need to be assessed by a doctor immediately.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) – Symptoms include dizziness, shakiness, sweating, blurred vision, and a fast heartbeat. The risk is higher in people also taking insulin or sulfonylureas for diabetes.
  • Kidney problems – Severe dehydration from nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea can strain the kidneys. Look for symptoms like reduced urine output, swelling, or shortness of breath.
  • Gallbladder problems – Wegovy® may increase the risk of gallstones and gallbladder disease. Symptoms include upper abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, or clay-colored stools.
  • Allergic reaction – Symptoms such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat require immediate medical attention.
  • Thyroid tumors or cancer – Though observed only in animal studies, GLP-1 medications like Wegovy® have been linked to thyroid tumors. Watch for symptoms like a lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing, or persistent hoarseness.

For a full breakdown of potential risks, see Wegovy® safety information.

Alternatives to Wegovy®

Wegovy® is a well-known option for weight loss, but it’s not the only one. Several GLP-1 medications and other prescription treatments can support weight management, and some may be more affordable or better covered by your insurance. Here’s a look at the alternatives:

Semaglutide medications

Wegovy® is the version of semaglutide approved for weight loss, but other semaglutide medications can have similar effects, and your doctor might prescribe them off-label. These include:

Tirzepatide medications

Tirzepatide medications target both GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which may lead to greater weight loss than semaglutide. Here are the two medications that contain it:

  • Zepbound® – Zepbound® is FDA-approved for weight management under the same BMI criteria as Wegovy®. It comes in two forms: prefilled injection pens and a vial-and-syringe option. The prefilled pens cost $1,086 per month without insurance, while the vial-and-syringe format costs $349 per month for the 2.5 mg dose and $499 per month for the 5 mg, 7.5 mg, and 10 mg doses. Learn more about the cost of Zebound®.
  • Mounjaro® – Mounjaro® is approved for type 2 diabetes treatment but is often prescribed off-label for weight loss. The list price for Mounjaro® is approximately $1,080 per month without insurance. Learn more about the cost of Mounjaro®.

Liraglutide medications

Liraglutide works like semaglutide but is shorter-acting, requiring daily injections instead of weekly.

  • Saxenda® – Saxenda® is an FDA-approved weight-loss medication that follows the same BMI guidelines as Wegovy®. Saxenda® has a list price of $1,349 per month without insurance. Learn more about the cost of Saxenda®.
  • Victoza® – Victoza® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes management but is sometimes used off-label for weight loss. The cost of Victoza® ranges from $800 to $1,400 per month, depending on the pharmacy and insurance coverage.
  • Generic liraglutide – Generic liraglutide can be a lower-cost GLP-1 option for diabetes management and off-label weight loss. Pricing for generic liraglutide is approximately $470 for two pens and $704 for three pens.

Dulaglutide medication

Trulicity®  is a once-weekly injectable medication approved for type 2 diabetes, but it is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss. The list price for Trulicity® is approximately $987 per month without insurance. Learn more about the cost of Trulicity®.

Other weight-loss medications

While GLP-1 medications are a very popular choice, other medications can also be effective or more affordable for some people. Here are some of the alternatives. (Always double-check the prices at your pharmacy for the most accurate numbers.)

  • Metformin – Metformin is FDA-approved for diabetes, but it can be prescribed off-label for weight loss. It can help people lose modest amounts of weight. If you qualify for Noom Med, your clinician can decide if a prescription for metformin is right for you. It will cost $59 for the first month and $89 for recurring 3-month supplies if prescribed. You’ll also get access to medical counseling, a coach, and Noom’s trackers and tools. Learn more about the cost of metformin.
  • Orlistat – This medication helps block fat absorption and is taken three times daily with meals. The cost can vary widely, ranging from $50 to $800 per month without insurance.
  • Phentermine – Phentermine is an appetite suppressant designed for short-term use. It’s taken once daily to help reduce hunger. Prices typically range from $27 to $100 per month without insurance.
  • Diethylpropion – Diethylpropion is taken one to three times daily and is used for short-term appetite suppression. Its price ranges from $40 to $85 per month without insurance.
  • Naltrexone and bupropion (Contrave) – This combination drug is FDA-approved for weight management and helps reduce appetite and cravings. For people using the CurAccess™ Patient Support Program, Contrave is $99 per month with free shipping. If your insurance covers Contrave, it may cost less. Without these benefits, prices can range from $600 to $800 per month.

Making informed decisions about Wegovy® costs

Wegovy® is one of the most effective FDA-approved tools available for weight loss, but it’s also one of the most expensive. While insurance coverage can be hit or miss for weight loss, there are programs and pricing options that can make it more affordable. From savings cards to NovoCare® Pharmacy’s discounted pricing, taking the time to compare costs and explore eligibility can make a real difference in what you pay out of pocket.

If you’re considering Wegovy®, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider or connect with a Noom Med clinician to determine if it’s the right fit for your health needs, budget, and lifestyle. Like any GLP-1 medication, it works best when combined with long-term behavior changes like balanced eating and regular movement. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to switch from another weight-loss medication, knowing your options—and how to navigate costs—can help you make confident, informed decisions about your care.

Note: Ozempic® is not FDA-approved to treat obesity or for weight loss.
