Like most people, Jennie had dieted before and gone through periods of time where she’d focus on eating well and exercising more regularly, but eventually, these stints all came to an end. After seeing Facebook ads for a 2-week free trial and thinking about taking control of her health again for months, Jennie decided to stop putting it off and finally take the plunge.
From the get-go, Jennie was impressed with Noom’s evidence-based, holistic, and realistic approach to health.
At 30 years old, I assumed I knew what my body needed to be strong and healthy, but really, I didn’t. The program also realizes that you can’t starve yourself healthy and that healthy foods have calories too. It’s important to me that I don’t feel deprived or punished by my food and the educational articles have helped me understand nutrition better and make informed decisions.
She also loved how Noom recognized that reaching and sustaining her weight loss goals was about a lot more than choosing a salad over french fries. Her confidant and accountability partner, Coach Mairi, helped her take a look at the obstacles that were standing in her way, acknowledge them, and plan to overcome them.
My favorite thing about the program is the lack of shame. I know that my coach can see my activity but it’s not a threat, if anything it’s motivating to know that someone aside from myself is tracking my goals. Coaches are able to anticipate your barriers and offer real suggestions on how to overcome them that aren’t ‘eat a salad and take a walk!’ For example, my coach Mairi has been incredibly helpful by listening to seemingly small barriers, taking them seriously, and offering suggestions. I wouldn’t call up even my most supportive friends and say, ‘help, I don’t know what snacks to eat in a movie theater and just accidentally ate 1200 calories!’ but Mairi has never made my challenges seem insignificant. Coach Mairi has the insight to recognize that even small changes can be make a big difference, and every victory is a success even if it just means cutting out 100 calories.
What helped Jennie the most is that Noom made things easy, and helped to make her more aware of her actions.
I can’t believe I’ve been tracking my meals for 4 months but it’s easy to do and I’m still surprised by the calories in a certain food, the impact of eating multiple portions, and about trends I see in my eating when I look back at the end of the day.
Being more aware of her habits also helped her change them.
When I started my journey to become healthier I thought I knew how much I weighed but I was off by about 50 pounds. That was shocking, but for once, the knowledge didn’t drive me to baked goods. Stressful situations and setbacks have been easier to handle knowing my group is there for support and that the journey is about the long term.
Looking back, Jennie finds it hard to believe how different life is after just 16 weeks.
Now, I’ve lost about 30 pounds. I’ve been working hard to cook new foods that are natural, fresh, and delicious too. I’ve also gone back to fitness classes, and though it was tough to get back into the swing of things, I feel strong and capable now. I have also noticed that I have more energy at the end of the day and that my body just seems to function better and feel stronger.
Not only has she made so much progress in her health, she’s also made progress in her personal and professional life as well.
I feel more in control of my health. I know where I am, what I need to do to stay on track, and recognize the strides I’ve made in all areas of my life.
Many weight loss programs are prescriptive. They give you meal plans that are impossible to stick to or prescribe workouts that you dread. Jennie was initially intimidated by Noom’s goal-oriented approach, but finding out that the program was unique to her likes, dislikes and experience made it all the more valuable. But now she’s confident that she’s developed the skills she need to be successful for life.
Noom gives you a strong foundation and a place to work from; setting healthy habits is tough to do on your own. At first it was intimidating to think that I would be coming up with my own goals and markers of success but it quickly became empowering because no one knows me better than I know myself. There are weeks that I don’t hit my weekly goals, but there are always strengths to find and I feel like I’m set up to be successful. It’s also encouraging to know that there are always people in your corner who understand some of your struggles and are rooting for you.
Congratulations on all of your success, Jennie! We will continue to root for you as you continue on your journey to lasting health and happiness.
