You probably know by now that the human body is nearly 60% water. But do you know why it’s important to drink enough water?

Water helps to flush toxins out of your vital organs, keeps your skin healthy, and helps carry nutrients to your cells. Without water, we easily become dehydrated, which leads to headaches, irritation, and possibly fainting. Case in point, we need to drink water, and lots of it.

How much should you be drinking?

Chances are, you’ve heard of the “8 glasses a day” rule. And it’s not far off but a glass is a rather imprecise measurement. Instead, measure by liters. It’s hard to give a universal number (each person has different needs depending on daily activity level, your general health, and where you live)but As a general rule, women should aim for 2.2 liters per day (9 cups), and men should consume 3 liters of water per day (13 cups). Of course, you can go above these recommendations based on personal preference and activity level. Many people with high activity levels drink up to 4 liters a day.

Though the risk for drinking TOO much water is relatively low, you should still be aware of it. Hyponatremia occurs most often when too much water is consumed too quickly – it’s unlikely to happen over a period longer than three hours. Symptoms can mirror those of heat exhaustion: exhaustion, stomach pains, and headaches. To avoid hyponatremia, spread your water intake out over the course of a day.

What are the benefits of drinking enough?

Water is known to help with weight loss because it can help you feel full. Try drinking down a few gulps before eating to fill up.

Preventing dehydration leads to better brain function and overall mood improvements. A happy body and mind is one that is well-watered, so keep drinking!

Water also keeps your bodily fluids balanced. This may be obvious for functions like saliva or digestion, but water also helps keep blood flowing and keep your body temperature normal.

Water energizes your muscles and (can) make your hair shinier. Muscles require water to function, otherwise they fatigue and can’t function at normal levels. And when it comes to hair, some people report shinier hair as a result of drinking more water daily. Proper hydration of the scalp prevents dryness and flaking, which may in turn lead to shinier hair.

The benefits of water are endless. If you’re not thirsty by now, go fill up your cup or bottle anyway. Sure, you may find yourself making a few more trips to the bathroom, but hey, that’ll get your blood moving after sitting for a while!
