There’s been a lot of buzz recently about the importance of self-care, and for good reasons! A self-care routine (SCR) is not only an excellent way to support physical & mental health, but also  plays an instrumental role in nourishing your well-being. However, self-care is usually one of the first things to fall by the wayside when life gets busy or stressful, so today we are going to help you design your perfect SCR that will fit your needs and schedule.

Whether you have 50 minutes or 5 to dedicate to self-care, you can still reap the benefits such as having more energy, looking better, feeling better, reducing stress, boosting your immune system, having a stronger body, preventing injury, and feeling rested, satisfied and fulfilled.

Get Started Today! 4 Steps To Create Your Perfect Self-Care Routine

Step 1: What Nourishes Your Well-being?

Jump start you SCR, by taking a minute to write down a few self-care ideas. This will be your brainstorming session. There may not be time in your schedule to fit in every idea, but keep your list handy because there might be more time down the road. If you’re having a hard time coming up with ideas, don’t worry, we’re here to help! Check out these self-care categories:

Physical: Sleep, R&R, exercise, boost your nutrition, take a hot bath, get a massage, stretch, go to acupuncture, personal training session, join a gym, play in nature, walk the dog, get a facial, What else would you add to this list?

Mental/Emotional: Journaling, practice affirmations, spend time in nature, declutter/spring clean, unplug from your devices, meditate, read, get more sleep, R&R, counseling, spend time with friends & family, practice yoga, attend a support group, exercise, listen to a guided meditation or music, practice gratitude. etc. How do you like to take care of your mental/emotional well-being?

Lifestyle: Spend time enjoying your favorite hobby, hiking, being creative: paint, take pictures, make music. Spend time in nature, socialize, try something new, take a class, go sightseeing, go to the movies, take a stay-cation etc. What do you like to do for fun?

Step 2: Consider The Three Ws

A good place to start when creating your perfect SCR is to consider the 3 Ws!

What, Where and When.

  • What would you like to include in your SCR?
  • Where will it take place? (At home, work, outside, at the gym etc.)
  • When/for how long? (Day(s) of week, time of day, length of time.)

Here’s an example: What: Meditate. Where: At home: When/for how long: On Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 8:00am -8:10am. And voila! Time to pencil your new plan into your calendar!

Step 3: Map it out!

Next up, it’s time to create a self-care calendar. In order to prioritize YOU, it’s important you pencil in “me time” throughout your week. Once you have chosen your top self-care picks begin to plug them in. For example, this may include a new morning routine on Mon, Wed, Fri, trying a new class Saturday afternoon, or scheduling an acupuncture appointment two weeks from today- and boom! Your self-care map is complete.
